EC PROPOSALS ON ENERGY LIBERALISATION: ZMINIJIETNA'S POSITION

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left expressed its opposition to the European Commission's new proposals for the liberalisation of the energy sector.

Zminijietna said

"The European Commission is advocating full liberalisation of energy services and is proposing the separation between the production and distribution of energy. Effectively this will result in the dismantling of companies which have given a public service for many years. Irrespective of the EU's aims to have more renewable energy, this will not guarantee investment in such energy. There is also no guarantee by the Commission that energy prices will decrease".

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left added

"Energy is a strategic asset which should be accessible to everyone. The production, transportation and distribution of energy cannot be left at the mercy of the market and should be entrusted to public operators equipped with the necessary industrial means and which are accountable to democratically elected governments, workers and consumers, and which strive for a socially just balance between affordability and environmental sustainability. We believe that energy is an essential public service, and we are supporting the positions of the United Left in the European Parliament and of the European Trade Union Confederation".

Whilst  Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden and the UK are supporting the Commission's proposals, Germany, France, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Luxembourg and Slovakia are opposing them, arguing that the breaking up of national and regional energy monopolies, may undermine energy security and drive up prices for consumers.

"The Maltese Government should join the opposing countries. At the same time, the Government of Malta should do more to increase the share of renewable energy in Malta, and to have more renewable energy use, thus reducing energy dependence. Zminijietna also agrees with the option of laying a gas pipeline between Sicily and Malta to help meet the realistic energy demands in Malta. Above all, Zminijietna - Voice of the Left believes that it is the Government's duty to ensure affordable energy for everyone whilst encouraging sustainable use".

IL-PROPOSTI TAL-KUMMISSJONI EWROPEJA DWAR IL-LIBERALIZAZZJONI TA'
L-ENERGIJA: IL-POZIZZJONI TA' ZMINIJIETNA

Zminijietna - Lehen ix-Xellug esprimiet l-oppozizzjoni taghha ghall-proposti godda tal-Kummissjoni Ewropeja dwar il-liberalizazzjoni fis-settur ta' l-energija.

Zminijietna qalet

"Il-Kummissjoni Ewropejja hi favur liberalizazzjoni shiha tas-servizzi ta' l-energija u qed tipproponi s-separazzjoni bejn il-produzzjoni u d-distribuzzzjoni ta' l-energija. Effettivament dan ser iwassal ghall-izmantellar ta' kumpaniji li ilhom jaghtu servizz pubbliku ghal hafna snin. Irrispettivament mill-ghanijiet ta' l-UE biex ikun hemm iktar energija alternattiva, dawn il-proposti mhux ser jiggarantixxu iktar investiment f'din it-tip ta' energija. Lanqas m'hemm l-ebda garanzija mill-Kummissjoni li l-prezzijiet ta' l-energija ser jinzlu".

Zminijietna - Lehen ix-Xellug ziedet

"L-energija ghandha importanza strategika u ghandha tkun accessibli ghal kulhadd. Il-produzzjoni, trasportazzjoni u d-distribuzzjoni ta' l-energija ma tistax tigi mitluqa ghas-suq, u ghandha tkun fdata f'idejn operaturi pubblici li ghandhom il-mezzi necessarji u li huma accountable ghall-gvernijiet li gew eletti demokratikament, ghall-haddiema u ghall-konsumaturi, u li ghandhom joholqu bilanc bejn prezzijiet affordabbli u sostenibilita' ambjentali. Nemmnu li l-energija hi servizz publiku essenzjali, u ghalhekk nappoggjaw il-pozizzjoni tal-blokk Xellugi fil-parlament Ewropew u tal-European Trade Union Confederation".

Filwaqt li d-Danimarka, l-Olanda, l-Isvezja u r-Renju Unit huma favur il-proposti tal-Kummissjoni Ewropeja, minn naha l-ohra il-Germanja, Franza, l-Awstrija, il-Bulgarija, ic-Cipru, l-Grecja, il-Latvja, il-Lussemburgu u l-iSlovakja huma kontra l-proposti, minhabba li skond dawn il-pajjizi dawn ser iwasslu ghall-izmantellar ta' monopolji fl-energija nazzjonali u reggjonali, u li minhabba f'hekk jista' jkun hemm implikazzjonijet fuq is-sigurta' ta' l-energija, u prezzijiet aktar gholjin ghall-konsumaturi.

"Il-Gvern Malti ghandu jinghaqqad mal-pajjizi li qed jopponu l-proposti tal-Kummissjoni Ewropeja. Fl-istess hin il-Gvern Malti ghandu jaghmel iktar biex jizdied l-uzu ta' l-energija alternattiva, biex b'hekk Malta tnaqqas id-dipendenza fuq sorsi barranin ta' l-energija. Zminijietna taqbel mal-possibilita' li jkun hemm  konnessjoni ma' Sqallija ghall-uzu tal-gass biex b'hekk Malta tlahhaq mad-domanda reali ghall-energija. Zminijietna  - Lehen ix-Xellug issostni li l-Gvern ghandu d-dmir li jizgura energija affordabbli ghal kulhadd filwaqt li jinkoragixxi uzu sostenibbli tieghu ".
