EU BIOFUEL POLICY SHOULD BE OPPOSED - Zminijietna

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left appealed to the Maltese Government and to the Maltese Members of the European Parliament to take a stand against raising the share of biofuels within the EU in view of their adverse social and ecological impacts, whereby crops shall be used to fuel cars rather than feed people.

Zminijietna said

"EU leaders are committed to raising the share of biofuels in transport from current levels of around 2% to 10% by 2020. Representatives from EU Member States are currently meeting to decide upon sustainability criteria. Yet the United Nations World Food Programme and various Environmental NGOs, progressive movements, human rights groups and peasants' organisations are
stating that increasing biofuel production shall result in massive increases in food prices and more widespread hunger".

"This is because agricultural land is being used to produce biofuel instead of foodcrops, thus causing a shortage of food. Besides, rainforests which are carbon sinks are being cut down, the people who live in them disposed and the wildlife is threatened with extinction".

As things stand, therefore, biofuels are causing immense social and ecological damage".

"Zminijietna - Voice of the Left believes that an important change which will help cut down emissions from transport is widespread reform in public transport.

Besides, taxation on luxury cars which consume excessive amounts of fuel should increase drastically. New ecologically sustainable technologies should also be looked into".

BIOFUEL: IL-POLITIKA TA’ L-UE GHANDHA TIGI OPPONUTA - Zminijietna

Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug appellat lill-Gvern Malti u lill-membri Maltin tal-Parlament Ewropew sabiex jopponu ghal zieda fl-uzu ta’ biofuels fl-Unjoni Ewropea minhabba l-impatti negattivi socjali u ekologici.

Zminijietna qalet

"Mexxejja ta’ l-UE huma kommessi li jzidu l-uzu tal-biofuels ghat-trasport minn 2% ghal 10% sal-2020. Rapprezentanti ta’ l-istati membri ta’ l-UE bhalissa qed jiltaqghu sabiex jiddeciedu kriterja ta’ sostenibilita’. Izda il- United Nations World Food Programme kif ukoll ghaqdiet ambjentali, progressivi, tad-drittijiet umani u tal-bdiewa qed jghidu li zieda fil-produzzjoni tal-biofuel ser twassal ghal zieda sostanzjali fil-prezz ta’ l-ikel u ghal iktar guh”.

"Dan minhabba li art agrikola qed tigi uzata biex jigi prodott il-biofuel minflok l-ikel ghan-nies, u b’hekk qed ikun hemm nuqqas ta’ ikel. Apparti minn hekk, foresti li huma bzonnjuzi biex jassorbu il-karbon qed jigu distrutti, ghad-detrimen tan-nies li jghixu fihom u ta’ annimali li huma mhedda li jigu estinti”.

Ghalhekk, il-biofuels qed jikkawzaw hsara kbira socjali u ekologika”.

"Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug temmen li l-bidla importanti li tghin jitnaqqsu l-emissjonijiet mit-trasport huwa li jkun hemm riforma kbira fit-trasport pubbliku. Barra min hekk, ghandu jkun hemm zieda drastika ta’ taxxa fuq karozzi lussuzi li jikkonsmaw ammonti eccessivi. Teknoligiji li huma ekologikament sostenibbli ghandhom jinghataw importanza xierqa”.
