National Taskforce required for Malta Shipyards

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left called for a national taskforce on the future of the Shipyards.

"We urge the Government to form a national taskforce on Malta Shipyards, involving political parties, the General Workers Union, and other stakeholders from commercial, academic and other sectors, both Maltese and European. Such a taskforce should aim to find a solution through which Malta Shipyards could be made viable through factors such as higher productivity and diversification of production. Such a taskforce should also investigate the possible options through which Malta Shipyards could operate whilst ensuring the best possible future for its workers".

"We believe that, as is the case with projects such as Smart City, Government should take a direct role in operations of the Shipyards. Government should retain the priceless assets of the Shipyards area to continue having a stake in operations. Government should safeguard workers' employment whilst ensuring that the Shipyards area does not become a prime site of property speculation".

"Government could have taken a more pro-active position once it became clear that under EU regulations, subsidies to Malta Shipyards would have to stop by 2008", concluded Zminijietna.

Jinhtieg Taskforce nazzjonali ghat-Tarzna

Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug appellat lill-Gvern biex johloq taskforce nazzjonali ghall-futur tat-Tarzna.

"Dan it-taskforce ghandu jinkludu partiti politici, il-General Workers Union, u rapprezentanti ta’ setturi ohrajn fosthom dawk kummercjali u akkademici, kemm Maltin kif ukoll Ewropej. Dan it-taskforce ghandu jsib soluzzjoni li permezz taghha t-Tarzna tista’ ssir vijabli permezz ta’ fatturi bhall-produttivita’ akbar u diversifikazzjoni tal-produzzjoni. Dan it-taskforce ghandu jinvestiga ukoll il-possibilitajiet li permezz taghhom it-Tarzna tista’ tibqa’ topera filwaqt li tizgura l-ahjar futur possibbli lill-haddiema taghha”.

"Nemmnu li, bhal m’hu l-kaz f’progetti bhal dak ta’ Smart City, il-Gvern ghandu jkollu rwol dirett fl-operazzjonijiet tat-Tarzna. Il-Gvern ghandu jibqa’ sid ta’ l-assi tat-Tarzna, li ghandhom valur gholi filwaqt li jibqa’ jkollu rwol fil-hidma tat-Tarzna. Il-Gvern ghandu jiggarantixxi li l-haddiema ikollhom xoghol filwaqt li jizgura li s-sit tat-Tarzna ma ssirx zona ta’ spekulazzjoni tal-propjeta’”.

"Il-Gvern seta ha pozizzjoni iktar pro-attiva meta kien car li taht ir-regoli ta’ l-UE, is-sussidji lit-Tarzna kellhom jiefqu sa’ l-2008”, ikkonkludiet Zminijietna.
