Malta should implement Waste framework directive - Zminijietna

Zminijietna – Voice of the Left, which is officially represented at MEUSAC’s sectoral committees, said that Malta should implement the proposed EU waste framework directive 2008/98/EC.  The directive states that 50% of household waste and 70% of construction and demolition waste have to be collected and recycled by 2015.

Zminijietna said

'The introduction of recycling targets for household waste and construction and demolition waste and the introduction of extended producer responsibility are the way forward for ecological sustainability. Malta 's waste practices are unsustainable, resulting in mountains of waste, and the liberalisation of plastic bottles as from last year has added further problems. Producers should be responsible for their products and thus be obliged to recycle as much as possible. Zminijietna also believes that waste separation at households should be given more priority by the Government, where, for example two days a week are used for collection of just separated waste, and where recycling bags should be subsidised by the state'.

'Unless Malta undergoes a culture change on waste practices, landfills will not suffice for waste, giving space for unhealthy and expensive incineration. Reduction and re-use should be given top priority by the State. Government should not succumb to short-term business interests of private companies, but to the contrary should implement such framework directive. Government should also incentivise civil society to reduce, re-use and recycle waste', added Zminijietna - Voice of the Left

Malta ghanda timplimenta d-Direttiva dwar l-iskart – Zminijietna

Zminijietna –Lehen ix-Xellug, li hija ufficjalment rapprezentata fil-kumitati settorali ta’ MEUSAC, qalet li Malta ghanda timplimenta d-Direttiva ta’ l-EU dwar l-iskart ‘EU waste framework directive 2008/98/EC’.  Id-Direttiva tghid li 50% ta’ l-iskart domestiku u 70% ta’ l-iskart tal-kostruzzjoni u ta’ twaqqiegh ghandu jingabar u jigi reciklat mal-2015.
Zminijietna qalet

‘L-introduzzjoni ta’ miri ghar-reciklar ta’ skart domestiku u kostruzzjoni u twaqqiegh, flimkien ma’ politika li tpoggi iktar responsabilita’ fuq il-produtturi hija t-triq il-quddiem ghal sostenibilita’ ekologika.  Il-prattici fl-iskart f’Malta huma insostenibbli u qed jirrizultaw f’muntanji ta’ skart. Il-liberalizzazzjoni tal-flixken tal-plastik mis-sena l-ohra ziedet aktar il-problema.’

‘Il-produtturi u l-importaturi ghandhom ikunu responsabli ghal prodotti taghhom u b’hekk ghandhom jigu obligati jirriciklaw kemm jistghu. Zminijietna temmen ukoll li separazzjoni ta’ l-iskart domestiku ghandu jinghata aktar prijorita mill-Gvern, fejn, per ezempju jumejn fil-gimgha jkunu uzati ghal gbir ta’ skart separat, u l-boroz uzati ghar-reciklar ghandhom ikunu ssussidjati mill-Gvern.’

'Sakemm Malta ma’ jkollhiex bidla kulturali fil-prattici ta’ l-iskart, l-art ghal tfiegh ta’ l-iskart (landfills) mhux ser isservi, u din ser tohloq bzonn ghall-inciniratur li jiswa’ hafna flus u li huwa ta’ detriment ghas-sahha. Il-Gvern ghandu jaghti priorita’ lill-politika favur it-tnaqqis ta’ l-iskart u favur li prodotti jergghu jintuzaw minflok ma jintremew. Il-Gvern m’ghandux icedi ghal interessi kummercjali, imma ghal kuntrarju ghandu jimplimenta direttiva dwar l-iskart. Nemmnu li l-Gvern ghandu jincentiva s-socjeta civili sabiex jnaqqsu, jergghu juzaw u jirreciklaw l-iskart’, ziedet Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug.
