'Incinerator: A monument to failed waste management policies'

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left referred to Government's plans for an Incineration plant in Delimara as a monument to failed waste management policies based on an ideology and culture of unsustainable consumption.

Zminijietna said

'Even though improvements were made in Malta 's waste management over the past years, Malta is not reaching its targets of sustainability. Not enough effort has been made to reduce unsustainable consumption practices, and in some cases, the current situation is worse than in previous years. The mass production and consumption of plastic bottles, which have all but replaces glass bottles in the soft-drink market is a case in point. In this case, business interests have prevailed over ecological realities. The influx of millions of bottles is ecologically harmful not only in terms of waste, but also due to the energy and materials used to produce such products, thus effecting climate change'.

'Government's plans to build an incinerator confirm that Malta 's current landfill policy will soon be outdated due to lack of available land for such purposes. It is only a change in culture, driven both by the State and civil society that can change this scenario. However such a culture should not be subject to commercial interests which are after short-term profits'.

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left added that there are various doubts on the pollution generated by incinerators, which in itself calls for wide-range public consultation and credibile scientific studies before any decision is made by Government.

Inceneratur: Monument li jissimblizza l-falliment fl-Immanigjar ta’ l-Iskart

Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug iddeskrivit il-pjanijiet tal-Gvern ghall-inceneratur gewwa Delimara bhala monument li jissimbolizza l-falliment fil-politika tal-Gvern dwar l-immanigjar ta’ l-iskart, ibbazata fuq ideologija u kultura ta’ konsum insostenibbli.

Zminijietna qalet

“Ghalkemm sar certu progress fl-immanigjar ta’ l-iskart f’dawn l-ahhar snin, Malta mhiex qed tilhaq il-miri stabiliti ta’ sostenibilita’. Filfatt jidher li ma’ tantx sar sforz sabiex il-prattici ta’ konsum insostenibbli jigu mnaqqsa. F’certu kazijiet jidher li s-sitwazzjoni prezenti hija aghar mis-snin l-imghoddija. Il-produzzjoni massiva u l-konsum ta’ flixken tal-plastik minn dawk tal-hgieg fis-suq ta’ ‘soft-drinks’ huma ezempju ta’ dan. F’dan il-kaz, l-interess tas-settur kummercjali pprevela fuq rejaltajiet ekologici.

L-influss ta’ miljuni ta’ flixken tal-plastik qed jissarrfu fi hsara ekologika, mhux biss f’termini ta’ skart, imma anka minhabba l-konsum ta’ energija u materja prima li trid tuza biex tipproducihom, li qed jhallu effetti kbar ghat-tibdil fil-klima.”

Il-pjanijiet tal-Gvern li jibni inceneratur jikkonferma li l-politika prezenti dwar l-‘Engineered landfill’ mhux ser tibqa’ wahda valida minhabba n-nuqqas ta’ art. Hija biss bidla fil-kultura mbuttata mill-istat u s-socjeta civili li tista’ tbiddel is-sitwazzjoni prezenti. L-istess kultura ma’ ghandiex tkun suggetta minn interessi kummercjali li jharsu lejn profitti f’qasir ta’ zmien.

Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug ziedet tghid li hemm diversi dubji fl-inkwinazzjoni li jiggeneraw l-inceneraturi, ghalhekk hemm bzonn ta’ konsultazzjoni wiesgha flimkien ma’ studji xjentifici kredibli qabel ma’ l-Gvern jiehu xi decizjoni fuq din il-materja.
