Zminijietna Appeals for universal Cancer Screening

Whilst welcoming Government’s stand for breast-screening for women aged 50-59, which will eventually be available to those aged 50-69, Zminijietna – Voice of the Left said that this is not enough to tackle inequalities and social injustices related to healthcare.

Zminijietna, which forms part of the MEUSAC sectoral committees, said

‘All women should benefit from such screening irrespective of their age. In Europe, 35% of women with breast cancer are under 55 years old and 12% are under 45 years old. Besides, other forms of cancer such as those mentioned by the EU commission – including those which are more likely to effect men - should also be characterised by free and universal screening’.

'Low income and poverty are key-factors amongst others in ill-health, and this is also true of deaths from cancer. Many cannot afford the hefty fees demanded by the private sector. We therefore call for the introduction of universal and free public schemes such as free cervical vaccination and free and prompt breast cancer screening'.

'Within the EU, more than two million Europeans suffer from some form of cancer, and roughly one million die, mainly from lung, colon or breast cancer. However, around one-third of cancers in the EU are preventable and another 30% can be successfully treated..

'Zminijietna therefore appeals to Government, MEPs and civil society organisations to speak up for stronger European coordination against cancer'.

Zminijietna tappella ghal screening universali tal-kancer

Filwaqt li laqghet il-pozizzjoni tall-Gvern ghall-screening ghall-kancer tas-sider ghal nisa ta’ bejn l-eta ta' 50 u 59 u eventwalment bejn l-eta ta' 50 u 69, Zminijietna – Lehen ix-Xellug qalet li dan mhux bizzejjed biex jigu meghluba l-inugwaljanzi u l-ingustizzji socjali relatat mas-sahha.

Zmijietna, li hija tifforma parti mill-kumitati settorali tal-MEUSAC, qalet

‘In-nisa kollha ghandhom igawdu mill-iscreening tas-sider irrespettivament mill-eta’. Fl-Ewropa 35% tan-nisa bil-kancer tas-sider huma taht leta ta' 55 sena u 12% huma taht l-eta ta' 45 sena. Fl-istess waqt, forom ohra ta' kancer bhal dawk imsemmija mill-Kummissjoni Ewropeja, li jinkludu ukoll uhud li aktar jaffetwaw lill-irgiel, ghandhom jkunu wkoll ikkaraterizzati minn screening b’xejn u universali.

"Dhul baxx u l-faqar huma fatturi essenzjali li jiddeterminaw nuqqas ta' sahha, u dan jaffetwa ukoll l-imwiet mill-kancer. Hafna ma' jistghux jaffordjaw il-hlasijiet gholjin li jitolbu sptarijiet jew klinici privati. Ghalhekk nappellaw ghal introduzzjoni ta' skemi publici universali u b’xejn bhal vaccin ghal virus cervikali u screening kontra l-kancer tas-sider'.

‘Gewwa l-EU, aktar minn zewg miljun persuna ibatu minn xi tip ta' kancer, fejn miljun minnhom imutu, minhabba varji ta' kancer fosthom il-kancer tal-pulmun, ta’ l-imsaren u tas-sider. Terz mill-kancers gewwa l-Ewropa huma prevenibli u 30% ohra jistghu jigu trattati’.
 .
'Zminijietna ghalekk tappella lill-Gvern, membri tal-Parlament Ewropew u ghaqdiet tas-socjeta’ civili sabiex jitkellmu favu koordinazzjoni Ewropea iktar b’sahhitha kontra l-kancer’.
