Government should be clear on maternity leave

With regard to the EU proposal to increase maternity leave from 14 to 20 weeks, Zminijietna - Voice of the Left noted that Government changed its position from one against an extension in maternity leave to one in favour. Zminijietna said that in order to be credible Government should make it clear if it will back such a proposal if discussed in the European Council, when the same Government opposed an increase in maternity leave a few months ago. Even when given the chance lately, the European Members representing the Nationalist Party did not vote in favour of an increase in maternity leave. In the European Parliament this directive is being supported by the United Left, by the Greens and by the Socialists.

'Zminijietna appeals to Government to vote in favour of directives that safeguard family needs and work. This will enhance equality between sexes. Increase in maternity leave can result in better working conditions, increased access to women in the labour market and concrete policies in favour of families. Zminijietna believes that both men and women should participate in the labour market and in family caring roles.'

'Countries like Scandinavian ones that promote legislations in favour of the family, are characterized with more equality between sexes and more female participation in the labour market. According to international institutions such as the United Nations Development Programme and the World Economic Forum, the economies of these societies are also amongst the strongest in the world.'

Il-Gvern ghandu jkun car dwar il-‘maternity leave’

Zminijietna - Lehen ix-Xellug innutat li Gvern biddel il-pozizzjoni tieghu minn wahda ta' kontra ghal dik favur rigward id-direttiva ta' l-UE ghal zieda fil-'maternity leave', jigifieri li maternity leave jitla' minn erbatax ghal ghoxrin gimgha. Izda qalet li biex ikun kredibbli, il-Gvern ghandu jiddikjara jekk hux ser jappoggja din il-proposta jekk tigi diskussa fil-Kunsill tal-Ministri, meta l-istess Gvern oppona zieda fil-maternity leave ftit xhur ilu. Barra minn hekk, meta kellhom ic-cans ftit tal-gimghat ilu, il-Membri Parlamentari Ewropej tal-Partit Nazzjonalista ma vvutawx favur zieda fil-maternity leave. Fil-parlament Ewropew din id-direttiva qed tkun appoggjata mill-blokk ta' Xellug, mill-Partiti tal-Hodor u milll-Partiti Socjalisti.

Zminijietna tappella lill-Gvern biex jivvota favur direttivi li jharsu il-htigijiet tal-familja u x-xoghol. B'ligijiet bhal dawn nkunu qed nahdmu favur iktar ugwaljanza bejn is-sessi. Zieda fil-maternity leave tista' ggib maghha titjib fil-kundizzjonijiet tax-xoghol, iktar access ghan-nisa fis-suq tax-xoghol u politika konkreta favur il-familja. Zminijietna temmen li kemm l-irgiel u n-nisa ghandhom jippartecipaw fid-dinja tax-xoghol u fil-harsien tal-familja.'

Pajjizi  bhal dawk Skandinavi li jippromwovu aktar ligijiet favur il-familja huma karaterrizzati minn iktar ugwaljanza bejn is-sessi u aktar partecipazzjoni ta' haddiema nisa fis-suq tax-xoghol. Skond istituzzjonijiet globali bhall-United Nations Development Programme u l-World Economic Forum, dawn is-socjetajiet huma wkoll fost l-iktar socjetajiet ekonomikament b'sahhithom fid-dinja'.
