Maternity and Paternity Leave: Government's opposition will betray women's emancipation.

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left notes with satisfaction the approval of the Resolution voted by the majority of the European Parliamentary Members, to increase ‘maternity leave’ with full pay from 14 weeks to 20 weeks and the introduction of two weeks ‘parental leave’ with full pay. But the same could not be said about the Maltese Government who previously stated that he supported this directive and now has made a U - turn and is going to vote against it in the European Council of Ministers.

"The extension of maternity and parental leave will result in long term benefits in creating more equality between women and men and to socio-economic sustainability. This will also give men the chance for the first time to apply for a 2 weeks parental leave with full pay".

"If this directive is supported by all European Governments, including the Maltese Government, this legislation will make a great difference in the lives of many women across Europe. In the present scenario, women's employments rates decrease after they have children as women have to give up their careers in order to look after their family. Women have generally less regular and secure jobs, with many of them employed with inferior working conditions, as well as having the dual burden of domestic work, including caring responsibilities".

"The Malta Employers Association should address the problem of precarious employment in various sectors of the economy and the increase of the 'working poor', where the women are the mainly affected, rather than resorting to pressure on the Maltese Government to vote against this directive."

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left welcomes the vote taken by all Maltese MEPs in the European Parliament to support the entire package on this resolution, passed by 390 votes. All the Left parties in Malta, such as Alternattiva Demokratika, The Labour Party and The Communist Party of Malta support this Directive. Also supporting this directive are The National Council of Women, The National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE) and The General Workers Union.

We strongly appeal to the Maltese Government to follow in the footsteps of all Maltese MEPs and support this directive in the coming European Council of Ministers.

Leave tal-maternità u paternità: l-Opożizzjoni tal-Gvern titradixxi l-emanċipazzjoni tal-mara.

Żminijietna - Leħen ix-Xellug tinnota b'sodisfazzjon ir-Riżoluzzjoni vvutata favur mill-maġġoranza fil-Parlament Ewropew, għaż-żieda fil-leave tal-maternità bi ħlas sħiħ minn 14-il ġimgħa għal 20 ġimgħa u l-introduzzjoni ta’ żewġ ġimgħat ‘leave’ lill-missier bi ħlas sħiħ. Iżda l-istess ma jistax jingħad għall-Gvern Nazzjonalista li reċentement kien iddikjara li huwa favur u issa qed jagħmel ‘U-turn’ u se jivvota kontra fil-Kunsill tal-Ministri Ewropej.

”L-estensjoni tal-maternità u ‘leave’ għall-missier se jkunu ta’ benefiċċju fit-tul biex tinħoloq aktar ugwaljanza bejn in-nisa u l-irġiel u biex tinħoloq sostenibbiltà soċjo-ekonomika. Dan għandu wkoll jagħti l-irġiel l-opportunità għall-ewwel darba li japplikaw għal ġimgħatejn ‘parental leave’ bi ħlas sħiħ".

"Jekk id-direttiva ssib l-appoġġ sħiħ mill-Gvernijiet Ewropej, inkluż il-Gvern Malti, din il-leġiżlazzjoni se tagħmel differenza kbira fil-ħajja ta’ ħafna nisa madwar l-Ewropa. Fix-xenarju preżenti, ir-rata tan-nisa fl-impjieg qed tonqos wara li jkollhom it-tfal biex iċedu l-karriera tagħhom sabiex iħarsu il-familja. In-nisa ġeneralment għandhom mpjieg inqas regolari u sigur, fejn ħafna minnhom huma mpjegati b’kundizzjonijiet inferjuri tax-xogħol, kif ukoll qed jiffaċċjaw il-piż doppju ta' xogħol domestiku, inkluż ir-responsabbiltajiet fil-kura ta’ tfal.”

"L-Assoċjazzjoni ta’ Min Iħaddem għandha tindirizza l-problema ta’ xogħol prekarju fis-setturi varji ta’ l-ekonomija u ż-żieda ta’ faxxa ta’ nies b’paga mhux sostennibli "working poor ", fejn in-nisa huma l-aktar milquta, aktar milli jirrikorru għall-kampanja sabiex il-Gvern jivvota kontra din id-direttiva."

Żminijietna - Leħen ix-Xellug tilqa’ b’sodisfazzjoni il-vot meħud mill-MEPs Maltin kollha fil-Parlament Ewropew talli appoġġjaw il-pakkett finali tar-riżoluzzjoni, li ghadda b’390 vot favur. Il-partiti tax-Xellug kollha f'Malta, fosthom l-Alternattiva Demokratika, il-Partit Laburista u l-Partit Komunista Malti jappoġġjaw id-direttiva favur 20 ġimgħa ‘leave’ tal-Maternità bi ħlas sħiħ u l-introduzzjoni ta’ żewġ ġimgħat ‘parental leave’ bi ħlas sħiħ. Il-Kunsill Nazzjonali tan-Nisa, il-Kummissjoni Nazzjonali għall-Promozzjoni tal-Ugwaljanza (NCPE) u l-General Workers Union ukoll qed jappoġġjaw din id-direttiva.

”Nappellaw lill-Gvern Malti li jsegwi l-passi ta’ MEPs Maltin kollha u jappoġġja din id-direttiva billi jivvota favurha fil-Kunsill tal-Ministri Ewropej.”
