Poverty leads to Mental Health Problems

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left supports the World Mental Health day being commemorated next coming Sunday 10th of October. The focus of this year is on the relationship of mental health with chronic physical illness.

The rate of Mental Health problem in Malta is of 1 person per family. By 2020, WHO declared that this will be one of the major health issues and reports that, ‘Mental health problems occur in persons of all genders, ages and backgrounds and no group is immune to mental disorders but the risks are higher among those with low standard of living, the ‘working poor’, homeless and the unemployed.’

There is a link between poverty and mental illness as poverty brings lack of opportunities and creates distress which can later manifest in mental illness. A sudden change in the individuals' socio- economic status may also lead to extreme distress leading to mental illness.

Workers suffering from mental disorders may find difficulty in focusing and in participating in productive activity at the work place. This not only affects their ability to work but is a direct threat to a stable employment.

Women too are more at risk for suffering mental illness as they are more involved in child rearing and household burdens and have multiple roles in balancing work and family. All these create more distress for women and add the risk of mental illness. In most of the cases, women are most vulnerable to violence with considerable impacts on their psychological and emotional well being.

We appeal Government to invest more in the Health sector with regards human resources and services, to accept the reality that poverty exists and address this concerning issue, and implement new work legislations to tackle the problem of precarious employment in various sectors of the economy.

Il-Faqar jżid il-Problemi tas-Saħħa Mentali.

Żminijietna - Leħen ix-Xellug tappoġġja l-Jum Dinji tas-Saħħa Mentali li jiġi mfakkar nhar il-Hadd li ġej 10 ta’ Ottubru. L-enfasi ta’ din is-sena hija dwar ir-relazzjoni tas-saħħa mentali mal-mard fiżiku u kroniku.

Ir-rata ta’ individwi bil-problemi tas-Saħħa Mentali f'Malta huwa ta’ persuna għal kull familja. Sa l-2020, WHO ddikjarat li s-Saħħa Mentali se tkun ta’ mportanza kbira u r-rapportat li, “l-problemi ta’ saħħa mentali jseħħu fil-persuni ta’ kull sessi, etajiet u klassi soċjali u l-ebda grupp ma għandu immunità minn disturbi mentali. Imma r-riskji huma ogħla fost dawk b’livell ta’ għixien baxx, il-ħaddiema b’paga baxxa u kundizzjonijiet ħżiena, nies bla dar u dawk bla xogħol.”

Teżisti rabta bejn il-faqar u l-mard mentali, kif il-faqar iġib miegħu nuqqas ta’ opportunitajiet u joħloq periklu li aktar tard jista’ jimmanifesta f’mard mentali. Il-bidla f’daqqa f’dak li hu l-istat soċjo-ekonomiku tal-individwu jistgħu wkoll iwasslu għal tbatija kbira u stress li twassal għall-mard mentali.

Ħaddiema li jbatu minn disturbi mentali jistgħu isibu diffikultà f’dik li hi attenzjoni u jipparteċipaw anqas fl-attività produttiva fil-post tax-xogħol. Dan mhux biss jaffettwa l-abbiltà tagħhom li jaħdmu, imma hija theddida diretta għal stabilita ta’ mpjieg.

In-Nisa huma wisq aktar f’riskju ta’ tbatija ta’ mard mentali peress li dawn huma l-aktar li jġorru l-piżijiet ta’ trobbija tat-tfal u tad-dar u għandhom rwoli multipli fl-ibbilanċjar tax-xogħol u l-familja. Dana kollu qed joħloq tbatija għan-nisa u jżid ir-riskju ta’ mard mentali. Fil-maġġoranza tal-każijiet, in-nisa huma l-aktar vulnerabbli għall-vjolenza b’impatti konsiderevoli fuq il-psikoloġija u l-emozzjoni tagħhom.

Nappellaw biex il-Gvern jinvesti aktar f’dan il-qasam f’dawk li huma riżorsi umani u  servizzi, jaċċetta r-realtà li l-Faqar jeżisti u jindirizza din il-pjaga soċjali b’riformi soċjali, u jimplimenta liġijiet ġodda ta’ xogħol li jindirizzaw direttament il-problema ta’ xogħol prekarju.
