European Postal Service shifting to precarious employment

On the 8th of September various European Trade Unions had organised a mass demonstration in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg to appeal the European Commission for an immediate moratorium on the deadline in EU Plans for Postal Liberalisation by 2011, unless the European Commission fulfills its duties to protect the rights of the workers in this sector, as was stipulated in the Directive 2008/6/EC (1), that was supposed to ensure that workers are employed with decent working conditions and to ensure that the postal service remains a universal and adequate one.

Several Members of European Parliament belonging to the United Left Group and the Greens are also giving their full support to this issue. They appealed the European Commission to postpone the liberalization of the postal service until 'social justice' is ensured this sector.

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left criticizes the Nationalist Administration for the urgency shown in privatising the postal service, at the expense of the same service and the conditions of work of the employees. Indeed the recruitment of new workers with the private company Maltapost is mainly on a part-time basis and on a fixed contract. We can see that there is a similar trend to what had happened in the Netherlands with the postal company TNT, that has replaced gradually full-time jobs with precarious jobs, like part-time and temporarily jobs. We believe that this system applied will shift regular employment towards precarious jobs.

Unions should take note of what is happening in this sector and address this new trend in MCESD, and at EU level by supporting other European Trade unions. The Government should also address this unjustice situation.

Żminijietna tappoġġja s-Sejħa ta' Trejdjujins Ewropej favur Ġustizzja Soċjali fis-Settur Postali

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug qed tappoġġja s-sejħa ta' Trejdjujins Ewropej għall-moratorju fuq l-iskadenza fil-liberalizzazzjoni tas-settur postali, sakemm il-Kummissjoni Ewropea tissodisfa dmirijiet tagħha li tħares id-drittijiet tal-ħaddiema fis-settur postali kif kien ġie stipulat fid-Direttiva ta’ 2008/6/KE(1) li suppost kellha tiżgura li l-ħaddiema jkollhom kundizzjonijiet tajba ta' xogħol, li jitħares l-impatt soċjali li ġġib magħha l-liberalizzazzjoni f'dan is-settur u biex jiġi assigurat li servizz postali jibqa' wieħed universali u adegwat.

Diversi Membri Parlamenti Ewropej li jagħmlu parti mill-Grupp tax-Xellug Magħqud u mill-Ħodor qed jagħtu wkoll l-appoġġ tagħhom lil din il-kwistjoni. Huma appellaw l-Kummissjoni Ewropea sabiex tipposponi l-liberalizzazzjoni tas-suq postali qabel tiġi assigurata 'ġustizzja soċjali' fis-settur postali.

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug tikkritika l-Gvern Nazzjonalista talli b'għaġġla kbira privatizza s-servizz postali, b’detriment għall-istess servizz u l-kundizzjonijiet tal-ħaddiema. Filfatt l-ingaġġ ta’ ħaddiema ġodda mall-Maltapost qed jkun wieħed fuq bazi part-time u b’kuntratt defenit. Dana qed jwassal għal deterjorazzjoni fil-kundizzjonijiet tax-xogħol tal-ħaddiema kollha postali u qed jwassal biex is-servizz postali f'Malta jibda jitħaddem minn ħaddiema b'xogħol prekarju. Huwa ta’ mistħija li ħaddiema li qed jagħmlu l-istess xogħol jaqaw taħt kategoriji differenti ta’ xogħol.

Żminijietna tappella l-ħaddiema postali kollha sabiex flimkien mall-Unjins jaħdmu sabiex jtejbu l-kundizzjonijiet tax-xogħol tagħhom u jassiguraw li l-impjieg tagħhom jkun wieħed sigur u b'paga diċenti.
