Budget 2011:  Żminijietna appeals for an increase in the Minimum Wage

Żminijietna – Voice of the Left appeals Government and Social Partners in MCESD so that throughout the planning of the next Budget 2011, an increase in the minimum wage would be discussed.

“The fact that the economic system also depends on workers employed with a minimum wage means, that their value of work is an important factor to the economy. We believe that this should be addressed by a measure that would increase their minimum wage. The present rate of the minimum wage is basically low, where many families depending on this, are living in the risks of poverty, and also some below the poverty line, apart the reality of inferior working conditions they are employed in”.

Żminijietna criticises the continuous ‘anti social’ argument put forward by the social partners on the business side that, an increase in the minimum wage will undermine competitiveness and will be bad for the economy. One should keep in mind that the middle and upper classes can today distinguish themselves thanks to the militancy shown before by the workers, in their struggle for the introduction of the minimum wage. The classification of a minimum wage standard brought about a social justice concept and also gave a value to work.

Żminijietna – Voice of the Left maintains its argument in favour of an increase in the minimum wage in the next Budget 2011. It is imperative to appreciate the value of work of these workers and remember that they also have a family to sustain. The fact that it was a Left Government that introduced the minimum wage, we also believe that the Left can only bring about an increase in the minimum wage.

Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party, The Communist Party of Malta, General Workers Union and UHM have all came out in favour for an increase in the minimum wage.

Baġit 2011: Żminijietna tappella għal żieda fil-paga minima.

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug tappella l-Gvern u l-imsieħba soċjali fl-MCESD biex waqt it-tfassil u l-proġettazzjoni ta’ Baġit 2011 tiġi diskussa z-żieda fil-paga minima.

“Il-fatt li sistema ekonomika tiddependi wkoll mix-xogħol ta’ ħaddiema bil-paga minima, jfisser li l-valur tax-xogħol tagħhom huwa wieħed importanti għal ekonomija. Dan nemmnu li għandu jkun ndirizzat b’miżura favur żieda fil-paga minima. Ir-rata preżenti tal-paga minima huwa wieħed baxx, fejn ħafna mill-familji bil-paga minima qegħdin f’riskju ta’ faqar u oħrajn diġa qed jesperjenzaw il-faqar, apparti t-tip u kundizzjonijiet ta’ xogħol nferjuri li qed jitħaddmu fihom.”

Żminijietna tikkritika l-argument ‘anti soċjali’ li qed jressqu l-quddiem kontinwament l-imsieħba soċjali li huma fuq in-naħa tas-settur kummerċjali, li żieda fil-paga minima timmina l-kompetittivita u tbati l-ekonomija. Ta’ minn jinnota li l-klassi medja u dik ta’ fuq tiddistingwi ruħha grazzi għall-ġlieda li għamel l-istess ħaddiem favur l-introduzzjoni tal-paga minima. Il-klassifikazzjoni tal-paga minima daħlet il-kunċett tal-ġustizzja soċjali u anka tagħat valur lix-xogħol.

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug terġa ttenni l-argument tagħha favur żieda fil-paga minima għall-baġit 2011. Jeħtieg li napprezzaw il-valur tax-xogħol ta’ dawn il-ħaddiema u l-fatt li dawn għandhom familji xi jsostnu. Il-fatt li kien Gvern Xellugi li daħħal il-paga minima f’Malta, l-istess nemmnu li hu x-Xellug li jista’ jaħdem favur żieda fil-paga minima.

Il-Partit Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party, il-Partit Komunista Malti, l-General Workers Union u UHM lkoll ħargu favur żieda fil-paga minima.
