Press Release: EU Homelessness Strategy lacks in ‘social justice’

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left welcomes with caution the Resolution on EU homelessness Strategy.  This resolution approved by a large majority in the European Parliament sends out a strong political message that homelessness is an urgent issue, on which the EU must coordinate and support Member States’ policies in agreement of a framework for monitoring and reporting on the development of national and regional homelessness strategies.

“Prices of housing, in an open market economic system are on the increase. This is attributed to the lack of national social policies, high interest rates and the land itself is not an infinite resource. Those being more vulnerable to ending up homeless are the unemployed, people with mental and social problems, ex prisoners and families with low income”.

Żminijietna notes that the high cost of living and the austerity policies being imposed by Governments across Europe, are also putting a burden on the workers, adding up to a new reality that of the working poor. Precarious work is also a factor that is contributing towards poverty. Many families are also finding it difficult to pay their home loans because of these conditions.

“In addressing these issues, we believe that the European Union should aim to introduce new social policies to address the increase in property prices and speculation. Interest rates on home loans must be lower and harmonised across Europe”.

Stqarrija Stampa : ‘EU homelessness Strategy’ nieqsa mill-ġustizzja soċjali.

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug tilqa’ b’ċertu riservi r-riżoluzzjoni dwar ‘EU homelessness Strategy’. Din ir-riżoluzzjoni approvata mill-maġġoranza tal-membri Parlamentari Ewropej tibgħat messaġġ politiku qawwi li l-problema ta’ nies ‘homeless’ hi kwistjoni urġenti, fejn l-UE għandha tikkordina u tappoġġja l-istati membri fil-politika tagħhom, favur qafas ta’ ftehim, għall-moniteraġġ u rappurtar fi tfassil ta’ din l-istrateġija.

“Il-Prezzijiet tad-djar, f’suq ekonomiku miftuħ qegħdin kullma jmur jiżdiedu. Din hi attribwita ma nuqqas ta’ politika soċjali fuq bażi nazzjonali, rati ta’ nteressi għoljin, u l-art fiha nnifisha mhiex riżorsa infinita. Dawk l-aktar vulnerabbli li jispiċċaw ‘homeless’ huma nies bla xogħol, persuni bi problemi mentali u soċjali, ex priġunieri u familji bi dħul baxx”.

Żminijietna tinnota li ż-żieda fl-għoli tal-ħajja u l-miżuri ta’ awsteritá, li qed jkunu mposti f’diversi pajjiżi madwar l-Ewropa, qed wkoll jitfgħu piż fuq il-ħaddiema, li finalment qed jwasslu għal realtá ġdida ta’ ‘ħaddiema foqra’. Ix-Xogħol prekarju huwa wkoll fattur li qed jikkontribwixxi għall-faqar. Ħafna familji, huma wkoll qed isibuha diffiċli biex jħallsu s-self fuq id-dar tagħhom minħabba dawn realtajiet.

“Fl-indirizzar ta’ dawn il-problemi, aħna nemmnu li l-Unjoni Ewropea għandha timmira biex tintroduċi politika soċjali ġdida biex tindirizza ż-żieda fil-prezzijiet tal-proprjetá u l-ispekulazzjoni. Ir-rati ta’ l-imgħax fuq self għad-djar għandhom ikunu aktar baxxi u armonizzati madwar l-Ewropa”.
