Press Release: 2012 Budget lacks social justice

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left views the 2012 Budget as one which gives more importance to those who are well off, to the detriment of those workers and families who are on low income.
“For the sake of social justice, we insist that, low income families should have been protected, to minimise the impacts caused by the high energy prices, food and other essential items”.

“The revision of the tax as proposed, excluded a large number of families and individuals, including those who are no longer raising up children, and families with a ‘single wage earner’. The Government has once again given no attention to the national minimum wage”.

“On the other hand, Żminijietna considers positive, the increased in 'children allowance’, increased benefits to 80year old pensioners and the re-introduction of a subsidy home scheme to first time buyers”.

Żminijietna appeals to the Government so that the increase in investment in public health, translates itself in an improvement in primary health care, with regards the service and opening hours. Government should re-introduce dentistry service in the community.

“We hope that the proposal for increase in maternity leave comes into effect in a short period of time, and this will not find any obstacles in MCESD”.

“Żminijietna states that the budget does nothing to create a ‘Green Society’ and is in fact a step backwards from this aspiration. The Government has also failed to introduce fiscal measures to incentivise the creation of ‘green jobs’. Without these tax incentives we cannot expect the manufacturing industry to move in this direction”.

“On a negative note, is also the fact that, once again the Government has chosen to reward through tax incentives those families who chose to send their children to private schools, while children attending public schools, at Secondary level, are asked to pay for an opt out ‘white collar’ vocational subject in the field of Tourism, IT, business etc”.

“Also, ‘Blue collar’ vocational subjects in the field of craft are absent from school, to the detriment of all those students who do not succeed in academic level, and these students are leaving school (early school leavers) without any skills.”

Stqarrija Stampa: Bagit 2012 nieqes mill-ġustizzja soċjali.

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug tħares lejn il-Baġit 2012 bħala wieħed li jagħti aktar importanza lil min hu diġa komdu fis-soċjeta’, għad-detriment ta’ dawk il-ħaddiema u familji li għandhom dħul baxx.

“Nisħqu f’ġieħ il-ġustizzja soċjali li kellhom jkunu dawn il-familji li jiġu l-aktar mgħejuna sabiex l-impatt qawwi miż-żieda fil-prezzijiet ta’ l-enerġija, ikel u affarijiet oħra essenzjali jiġi mrażżan.”

“Ir-reviżjoni tat-taxxa kif mfassla teskludi numru mdaqqas ta’ familji u individwi, fosthom dawk il-familji li m’għadhomx irabbu, u familji b’ġenitur wieħed jaħdem. Għal darb’oħra l-Gvern ġie jaqa u jqum milli jżied il-paga minima nazzjonali”.

“Minn banda l-oħra Żminijietna tqies bħala pożittiva ż-żieda fi ‘children allowance’, l-għajnuna lill-pensjonanti ta’ l-fuq minn 80 sena u re-introduzzjoni ta’ skema ta‘ għajnuna għall-koppji li jixtru l-ewwel dar”.

Żminijietna tappella l-Gvern biex iż-żieda fl-investiment fis-saħħa pubblika jissarraf ukoll f’titjieb fil-ħinijiet u s-servizz tal-kura primarja u biex jiġi ntrodtt mill-ġdid is-servizz tad-dentistrija fil-komunitá.

“Nittamaw li l-proposta għal żieda fil-lif tal-maternitá tidħol fis-seħħ f’qasir żmien u nappellaw lill-imsieħba soċjali fl-MCESD biex ma jestakolawx dan il-pass”.

F’dik li hi enerġija rinnovabbli, Żminijietna tħares lejn dan il-baġit bħala pass lura sabiex is-soċjetá Maltija timxi l-quddiem lejn ‘Green society’. Il-Gvern naqas wkoll milli jdaħħal miżuri fiskali li jinċentivaw il-ħolqien tax-xogħol fi ‘green jobs’. Mingħajr dawn l-inċentivi fiskali ftit li xejn nistgħu nistennew li qasam tal-industrija u l-manifattura jimxi lejn din id-direzzjoni.

“Ta’ nota negattiva kien il-fatt wkoll li għal darb’oħra l-Gvern għażel li jippremja b’inċentivi fiskali lil dawk il-familji li għazlu li jibgħatu tfal tagħhom fi skejjel privati, filwaqt li tfal li jattendu fi skejjel pubbliċi, fil-livell sekondarju qed jintalbu jħallsu għal suġġetti ‘white collar vocational subjects’, fil-qasam ta’ Informatika, Turiżmu, etc”.

“Filwaqt li suġġetti vokazzjonali ‘blue collar’, li jidħlu fil-qasam ta’ snajja u l-artiġġjanat huma assenti bħala tagħlim fl-iskejjel pubbliċi, għad-detriment ta’ dawk l-istudenti li mhux qed jirnexxu fil-livell akkademiku, u qed jispiċċaw joħorgu mill-iskola mingħajr ebda kwalifiċi”.
