PR: Zminijietna criticises MEPA's position on Metropole Hotel

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left classifies MEPA’s position in giving a green light for the demolishment of Metropole Hotel in Dingli Street, Sliema and replacing it with a number of apartments, as a strange and ambiguous one.

"We cannot understand the justification behind this permit, when in other cases of controversial environmental concerns MEPA granted all permits, as in the cases of the extension of the Sea Bank Hotel and the Hilton Development. We, the people, were told that these permits were given with the premise that the tourism sector, economic growth and employment will benefit. Why was the same reasoning not applied in the case of the Metropole Hotel too?"

"This attitude, also shows a lack of serious planning on MEPA’s behalf since a number of applications for new hotels continue to be processed with disregard to the limitation of land in Malta.

The 2005 census revealed that from a total of 192,314 households in Malta and Gozo, 43,000 are empty dwellings. The locations of Sliema, Pembroke, St Julians and Gzira have the second highest rate of empty houses with the figure of 29 per cent. These statistics surely do not justify the rationale behind this development..

Zminijietna believes that the use of land where the Metropole Hotel once stood should have retained the same function. The cases of Mistra Village, Les Lapins Hotel in Ta’ Xbiex and Mgarr Hotel in Gozo are in actual fact nothing more than a display of unsustainable planning and speculation.

Zminijietna tikkritika l-posizzjoni tal-MEPA dwar il-futur tal-lukanda Metropole

Zminijietna - Lehen ix-Xellug tfisser il-posizzjoni tal-bord tal-MEPA biex titwaqqa il-lukanda Metropole fi Triq Dingli, tas-Sliema u minflok jinbnew numru ta’ appartamenti bhala wahda ‘stramba u ambigwa’.

“Ma nistghux nifhmu il-gustifikazzjoni wara dan il-permess meta f'kazijiet ohra kontroversjali ambjentalment, bhal l-estenzjoni ta’ ‘Sea Bank Hotel’ u l-izvilupp tal-‘Hilton’, il-MEPA tat il-permessi kollha, bil-premessa li minn dawn l-izviluppi kienu sejrin jibbenefikaw s-settur turistiku, it-tkabbir ekonomiku u l-impjiegi fl-istess settur. Nsaqsu, ghala ma ntuzax l-istess ragunar?”

“Dan juri wkoll, nuqqas ta’ ppjanar serju min-nahha tal-MEPA, ghalfatt li numru ta’ applikazzjonijiet għall-lukandi godda qeghdin jigu processati, kif ukoll il-fatt, li l-art f’Malta hi wahda limitata”.

Zminijieta tinnota li c-ċensiment ta’ l-2005 juri li minn total ta’ 192,314 ta’ postijiet residenzjali f'Malta u Għawdex, 43,000 huma vojta. Il-lokalitajiet ta’ tas-Sliema, Pembroke, San Giljan u l-Gzira, flimkien, ghandhom it-tieni l-akbar rata ta’ djar u appartamenti vojta bil-figura ta’ 29 fil-mija. Dawn l-istatistici zgur ma jiggustifikawx ir-razzjonalita favur l-izvilupp ta’ aktar appartamenti.

Zminijietna temmen li l-uzu ta’ l-art ghall-lukanda Metropole, kellu jibqa’ tali. Il-kaz tal-Mistra village, ta’ lukanda Les Lapins f’Ta’ Xbiex u Lukanda fl-Imgarr Ghawdex huwa fatt konkret ta’ ippjanar xejn sostenibli u spekulazzjoni.
