Press Conference: PR: "Euro Plus Pact threatens the Workers"

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left is holding this press conference together with the FOrum Unions Maltin, The General Workers Union, Moviment Azzjoni Xellug and Moviment Graffiti, to show our disapproval to the economic stimulus package of measures being proposed in European Parliament. This proposed package would negatively affect workers across the Europe.

"This package of measures is a continuation of the regressive policies that are being put forward by European Institutions. It is good to keep in mind that the purpose behind the Ports and Services Directive was to dismantle the social achievements and the present working conditions of the workers. It was only the thanks to the strong resistance offered by the Trade Unions, Left and Green Parties, that these directives were suppressed."

"Once again, today we are facing with another proposal for economic stimulus ranging from the dismantling of the collective agreement, reductions in wages and the conditions of workers. These new measures are also a direct threat to the Cost Of Living Adjustment system in Malta , because of the fact, that the suggestion is, that the wage increase should be directly linked with productivity of the country and not with the increase of the cost of living. "

"The fourth proposal regarding European competitiveness clearly speaks in favour of the deregulation of the labor market and the industry at large. In a simplistic way power is to be given to the companies to regulate themselves independently, in terms of working, social and environmental conditions”.

"In this package employment is forecasted to increase, by the creation of more precarious jobs, amongst them part-time employment, definite contracts of work, whereby the contract limit of employment is to be reduced further. These measures will grievously affect the workers to a great affect”.

“We note with regret the support in principle given by the Maltese Government to this package. (Ivan Camilleri reporting from Brussels on The Times, 2nd June 2011 entitled "Economic governance: Hopeful Brussels to reach deal this month).

In our opinion the position taken by the Maltese Government was taken without haste and is directly against the interests of the workers and their families. This position does not augur well for a social and ecological Europe , which we, the organisations present here believe. You can not have a Social Europe with anti social measures.

The organisations present here appeal to other Trade Unions to join in solidarity with fellow workers across Europe who are demonstrating for a Social Europe and give full support to the Confederation of European Trade Unions on any measures taken to safeguard the interests of workers.

We appeal to the Maltese Members of European Parliament to take a clear position against this package and press to reintroduce an alternative package of economic stimulus with a social and ecological vision.

Konferenza Stampa : “Euro Plus Pact theddida ghal-Haddiema"

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug qed issejjaħ din l-Konferenza Stampa biex flimkien ma’ l-FOrum Unjins Maltin, il-General Workers Union, il-Moviment Azzjoni Xellug u l-Moviment Graffitti nuru disapprovazzjoni tagħna għall-pakkett ta’ stimolu ta’ miżuri ekonomiċi li qed jiġi propost fil-Parlament Ewropew.  Il-Pakkett kif propost ser jaffettwa b’mod negattiv lill-ħaddiema kollha madwar l-Unjoni Ewropea.

“Il-pakkett ta’ miżuri huwa l-kontinwazzjoni ta’ politika rigressiva li qed tiġi mressqa f’Istituzzjonijiet Ewropej. Tajjeb li nżommu f’moħħna d-Direttiva tal-Portijiet u Direttiva tas-Servizzi li l-għan wara dawn id-direttivi kien li jiżmantellaw il-kundizzjonijiet preżenti tal-ħaddiema u l-kisbiet soċjali. Kien biss grazzi għall-kontribut qawwi u attiv tal-Unjins, Partiti tax-Xellug u dawk Ħodor, li dawn id-Direttivi trażżnu”.

“Illum għal darb’oħra għandna quddiemna proposta ohra għal stimolu ekonomiku li jvarja minn żmantellar tal-ftehim kollettiv, tnaqqis fil-pagi u l-kundizzjonijiet tal-ħaddiema.  Dawn il-miżuri huma wkoll theddida diretta għat-tħaddim tas-sistema tal-COLA, f’Malta, għalfatt li qed jiġi suġġeriet li żieda fil-paga tintrabat dirett mall-produttivita’ tal-pajjiż u mhux maz-żieda moghtija ghall-għoli tal-ħajja”.

“Ir-raba proposta rigward il-kompetittivita Ewropea titkellem b’mod ċar favur deregulazzjoni tas-suq tax-xogħol u l-Industrija inġenerali. B’mod simplistiku jridu li l-kumpaniji jingħataw aktar poteri mingħajr irbit regolat, f’dawk li huma kundizzjonijiet tal-ħaddiema u kriterji soċjali u ambjentali oħra.”

“B’dan il-pakkett l-impjiegi huwa suġġeriet li jiżdiedu, bil-ħolqien ta’ aktar xogħol prekarju, fosthom b’impjieg part-time,  u b’kuntratti defeniti tax-xogħol, li aktar ma jmur qed jonqos iż-żmien stipulat tax-xogħol. Daqstant narawha kbira it-theddida ta’ dan il-patt fuq il-ħaddiema”.

Minn hawn ninnotaw b’dispjaċir il-posizzjoni li ħa l-Gvern Malti fuq dan il-pakkett, fejn qed jagħti l-appoġġ sħiħ lil pakkett fuq bażi ta’ prinċipju (Mir-rapurtaġġ ta’ Ivan Camilleri minn Brussel fuq “The Times, 2 ta’ Gunju 2011 bit-titlu “Economic governance: Brussels hopeful to reach deal this month”).

Għalina l-posizzjoni tal-Gvern Malti hi waħda mgħaġġla u ma tħarisx l-interess tal-ħaddiema u l-familji tagħhom. L-istess din il-posizzjoni ma tawgurax tajjeb għall-Ewropa Socjali u Ekologika, li tant nemmnu fiha aħna, l-organizzazzjonijiet hawn preżenti. Nemmnu li ma jistax ikollok Ewropa Soċjali b’miżuri anti soċjali.

Flimkien hawn preżenti qed nappellaw lil Unjins oħrajn biex jingħaqdu b’solidarjeta mall-ħaddiema sħabhom Ewropej li qed jiddimostraw għal Ewropa b’aktar kunxjenża Soċjali u qed nagħtu l-appoġġ sħiħ lil Konfederazzjoni ta’ Trejdjunjins Ewropej, f’kull miżuri li tista’ tieħu biex tissalvagwardja l-interess tal-ħaddiema.

Nappellaw lill-Membri Parlamentari Maltin fl-Ewropa biex jieħdu posizzjoni ċara kontra dan il-pakkett u jgħafsu sabiex jiġi ntrodott mill-ġdid pakkett ieħor ta’ stimolu ekonomiku b’viżjoni soċjali u ekoloġika.
