Press Release: Żminijietna on International Women’s Day

Żminijietna said “in our society women have come a long way but are still struggling to strike a balance between family and career and many women are resorting to working part-time in order to achieve this. Others are being employed on a definite contract and as temporary workers”.

“These new work practices are lowering wages and bringing forward inferior conditions of work. This surely is affecting women. This is also the result of neo liberal economic policies which push forward atypical precarious employment”, said Żminijietna.

“To address the problem, new measures should seek to motivate ways to sustain and create decent work to ensure that women have decent standard of living, equal access to training and re-skilling”.

Żminijietna believes that “regular employment on a ‘flexible or reduced hours’ basis, at worker’s discretion should be the way forward, as this will safeguard women’s employability and conditions”.

“Another concern is that the gender pay gap is persistently high and thus creates discrimination towards women. Women are also still under represented in technical employment, management and in the political field”.

Żminijietna notes that there are other women who are not only not participating in the labour market, but have few opportunities in society and are at risk of living below the poverty line. These are single mothers who cannot afford child care centers, women with poor level of education, women with drug problems and others involved in crime or who have served a prison sentence.

With regards to this, “the State should empower these groups of women to continue with their education, so to seek jobs with decent conditions, provided that they also benefit from family friendly measures”, concluded Żminijietna.

PR: Żminijietna ssellem in-nisa fil-Jum Internazzjonali tal-mara

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug qalet “li fis-soċjetá tagħna n-nisa mxew il-quddiem, iżda ta’ min jfakkar li dawn għadhom qed jitħabtu biex jilħqu bilanċ bejn il-familja u l-karriera u minħabba f’hekk ħafna nisa qed jirrikorru għal xogħol part-time biex jiksbu dan. Oħrajn qed jimpjegaw ruħhom b’ kuntratt definit u oħrajn bħala ħaddiema temporanji”.
“Dawn il-prattiċi ġodda tax-xogħol qed iżommu l-pagi baxxi u jimbuttaw ‘l quddiem kundizzjonijiet inferjuri ta’ xogħol. L-aktar li qed jolqot huma n-nisa, għax l-maġġor parti tal-irġiel jaħdmu b’xogħol regolari. Dan hu riżultat ta’ politika ekonomika neo-liberali li qed tmexxi ‘l quddiem ix-xogħol prekarju atipiku minflok regolari”, saħqet Żminijietna.
Nemmnu li biex tiġi ndirizzata din il-problema, miżuri ġodda għandhom ifittxu li jinċentivaw modi li jsostnu u joħolqu xogħol diċenti. “Dana jassigura li n-nisa jkollhom livell ta’ għajxien diċenti, aċċess ugwali għat-taħriġ u ħiliet ġodda”, tgħid Żminijietna.

Żminijietna temmen wkoll li l-impjieg regolari b’sigħat flessibbli tax-xgħol jew imnaqqsa, skond id-diskrezzjoni tal-impjegat għandha tkun it-triq il-quddiem. B’hekk l-kundizzjonijiet, u post in-nisa fis-suq tax- xogħol jiġi aktar issalvagwardjat.

“Ta tħassib wkoll hi d-diskrepanza fil-pagi bejn l-irġiel u n-nisa li għadha għolja u qed twassal għal diskriminazzjoni fil-konfront tan-nisa. In-nisa wkoll mhumiex daqshekk rappreżentati f’impjiegi tekniċi, ‘management’ u l-qasam politiku”.

Żminijietna tkompli tgħid li hemm kategorija oħra ta’ nisa li mhux biss ma jipparteċipawx fis-suq tax-xogħol, iżda għandhom ftit opportunitajiet fis-soċjetà u huma f’riskju ta’ faqar. Dawn huma ommijiet waħedhom li ma jistgħux jaffordjaw li jħallsu sabiex jibgħatu tfal f’child care centres, nisa b’livell baxx ta’ edukazzjoni, nisa bi problemi tad-droga u oħrajn involuti fil-kriminalità jew li servew sentenza ta’ ħabs.

F’dan ir-rigward “l-Istat għandu jgħin biex dawn in-nisa jkomplu l-edukazzjoni tagħhom, biex ifittxu mpjiegi b’kundizzjonijiet tajba, bi provediment imma li dawn jibbenefikaw ukoll minn miżuri favur il-familja”, ikkonkludiet Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug
