Press Release: Budget lacks in Social Justice

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left notes that "although various Budget proposals are positive, such as the increase in children allowance, the fiscal benefit for +78 year old pensioners and the increase in funds for education, health, research and innovation, one cannot stay away from criticising the measure for a decrease in the tax rate from 35% to 25% for those earning between €20,000 and €60,000 per annum.

“This measure promotes a culture of individualism. It is the type of culture that brought about the collapse of the global economic system. We appeal other organizations to oppose such measures,” stated Żminijietna.

“Government should have applied the same reasoning, and instead of lowering the income tax rate, it should have introduced a revision in the tax bands. This measure would have promoted social justice since as a 'single person' on minimum wage will be exempt from paying income tax while those on a low, middle and upper middle income will also benefit.”

“Yet again, the government stops short of increasing the national minimum wage. On a positive note, the increase in the threshold for training those on a low pay is a positive measure.”

"Regarding the economy, the budget does not seriously explain how public finances will remain sustainable, how tax evasion will be addressed, how public investment in renewable energy will be implemented and how to solve the problem of an ever-increasing level of poverty in our society," concluded the organisation Zminijietna.

Stqarrija Stampa: Baġit nieqes mill-Ġustizzja Soċjali

Żminijietna - Leħen ix-Xellug tqies, li filwaqt li l-baġit fih numru ta' proposti li huma pożittivi, fosthom iż-żieda l-kulħadd fic-'children allowance', benefiċċji fiskali lill-pensjonanti ta' l-fuq minn 78 sena u dawk tas-servizzi, inċentivi fl-enerġija rinnovabli, u aktar investiment minn fondi pubbliċi fl-edukazzjoni, saħħa, riċerka u nnovazzjoni, ma tistax imma ma tikkritikax il-miżura mħabbra ta' tnaqqis fit-taxxa ta' dħul minn 35% għal 25%, għal dawk li jaqalaw bejn €20,000 u €60,000 fis-sena.

“Din hi miżura li tippromwovi aktar il-kultura ta' l-individwaliżmu. Kultura li ġabet magħha kollass ekonomiku fis-sistema globali. Il-gvern setgħa applika l-istess loġika, imma minflok naqqas ir-rata ta' taxxa, setgħa ntroduċa reviżjoni fuq l-ammont ta' dħul intaxxat (tax bands) fid-diversi faxex.”

“B’hekk tkun qed titħares l-ġustizzja soċjali”, saħqet Żminijietna, “fejn persuna waħedha bil-paga minima kienet tiġi eżentata mit-taxxa ta' dħul, filwaqt li dawk bil-paga baxxa, medja u ta' fuq mill-medja kienu lkoll jiggwadanjaw mit-tnaqqis fit-taxxa ta' dħul.”

“Għal darb'oħra l-gvern naqas milli jżied il-paga minima nazzjonali. Fuq nota pożittiva, iż-żieda fi ‘threshold’ għal taħriġ lil dawk fuq paga baxxa hija miżura tajba”.

“Rigward finanzi, l-baġit naqas wkoll milli jikkjarifika kif se titħares bis-serjetà s-sostenibilità tal-finanzi publiċi, l-ġlieda kontra l-evażjoni ta' taxxa, l-investiment pubbliku fl-enerġija rinnovabbli u l-problema dejjem tiżdied ta' nies relattivament foqra fis-soċjetà, ” kkonkludiet l-għaqda Żminijietna.
