Press Release: ACTA should not be imposed against the will of the People

Żminijietna – Voice of the Left is highly concerned with the developing situation on ACTA in Europe. The reality is that this treaty was signed by 22 European countries almost secretly without giving chance to the people and the European Parliament to discuss this matter.

“European Union is on a crossroad with regards greater participation of civil society on EU matters. This is leading to a Europe of the powerful, where the right of the people to voice their concern is being obscured”.

“International organization Oxfam stated that ACTA, threatens developing countries in accessing low priced generic medicines. This goes against the spirit of the European Union to help poor countries develop”.

Żminijietna believes that a more Europe is the way forward, and this can only be achieved if the European Union gives more say to the people in referenda, on such issues. Many people were denied the right to express themselves in other referenda, such as when the European Treaty was being introduced across Europe, while others who voted against, were forced to accept it through a parliamentary vote.

“If the Maltese Government believes in real democracy and in social justice, ACTA Treaty should be rejected and Europe should enforce the present European legislation with regards to counterfeit products and piracy”, stated Żminijietna.

“It is interesting to note that several important European member states, among them Germany, Cyprus and Poland are having second thoughts about ACTA, its legality and its effectiveness”, concluded Żminijietna.

Stqarrija għall-Istampa: ACTA ma għandux jiġi mpost kontra r-rieda tal-Poplu.

Żminijietna - Leħen ix-Xellug hija mħassba ħafna bis-sitwazzjoni li qed tiżviluppa dwar l-ACTA fl-Ewropa. Il-verità hi li dan it-trattat kien iffirmat minn 22 pajjiż Ewropej, kważi taħt segretezza, mingħajr ma taw ċans lill-poplu u l-Parlament Ewropew jiddiskutu din il-materja.

“L-Unjoni Ewropea tinsab f’salib it-toroq għal dik li hi parteċipazzjoni akbar tas-soċjetà ċivili dwar kwistjonijiet tal-UE. Din qed twassal għal Ewropa tal-kbar fejn id-dritt tal-poplu li jesprimi t-tħassib tiegħu qed jiġi oskurat”.

“L-Organizzazzjoni internazzjonali Oxfam, iddikjarat li l-ACTA hu ta’ theddida lill-pajjiżi li qed jiżviluppaw f’dik li hi aċċessibilitá ta’ mediċini ġeneriċi bi prezz baxx. Dan imur kontra l-ispirtu ta’ l-Unjoni Ewropea li tgħin pajjiżi foqra biex jiżviluppaw”.

Żminijietna temmen li ‘aktar Ewropa’ hija t-triq il-quddiem, u dan jista’ jinkiseb biss jekk l-Unjoni Ewropea tagħti aktar poteri lill-poplu fir-referenda, fuq kwistjonijiet bħal dawn. Ħafna nies ġew miċħuda d-dritt li jesprimu ruħhom f’referenda oħra, bħal meta t-Trattat ta’ l-Ewropa kien qed jiġi ntrodott, filwaqt li oħrajn li vvutaw kontra dan it-trattat, kienu sfurzati jaċċettawh permezz ta’ vot parlamentari.

“Jekk il-Gvern Malti jemmen fid-demokrazija reali u fil-ġustizzja soċjali, it-Trattat ACTA għandu jiġi miċħud u l-Ewropa għandha tinforza l-liġijiet preżenti tagħha fir-rigward ta’ prodotti foloz u l-piraterija”, stqarret Żminijietna.

“Interessanti li wieħed jinnota, li diversi stati membri Ewropej, fosthom il-Ġermanja, Ċipru u l-Polonja qed jaħsbuha dwar l-ACTA, legalità u l-effettività tagħha", ikkonkludiet l-Għaqda Żminijietna.
