Press Release: Silent march against violence

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left will be participating in the silent march being organized on the 20th of April by Aġenzija Żagħżagħ, Malta Girl Guides and the National Council of Women who joined forces in order to raise awareness about early signs of Violence in Relationships.

“Violence against women occurs in every European country and is a manifestation of unequal power relations between men and women”.

“Many EU member states have implemented national action plans to combat domestic violence having included in the legislation penal codes and support services, but still many challenges remain”.

“According to a study by the European Institute of Gender Equality, the majority of national action plans may lack monitoring and evaluation, lack of legal measures, and lack of efficient implementation of protection order. There are also a lower number of prosecutions compared to the number of the cases being reported”.

Żminijietna notes that “Malta is not lacking behind in services offered for victims of domestic violence and other forms of violence but there is always the need for more shelters and more specialized training for police officers who first come into contact with victims. This should also include more support for victims to help them re-integrate in society and participate in the labour market with decent jobs conditions”.

“Additionally, there should be more implementation of laws for more reporting and for getting women out violent environments along with increased legally binding programs for perpetrators”.

Stqarrija Stampa: Mixja kontra l-Vjolenza.

Żminijietna - Leħen ix-Xellug se tkun qed tipparteċipa fil-mixja kontra l-vjolenza organizzata mill-Aġenzija Żagħżagħ, Malta Girl Guides u l-Kunsill Nazzjonali tan-Nisa li ngħaqdu flimkien sabiex titqajjem kuxjenza dwar is-sinjali bikrija ta’ vjolenza f’relazzjonijiet.

Żminijietna qalet li “l-vjolenza kontra n-nisa sseħħ f'kull pajjiż Ewropew u hija manifestazzjoni ta’ relazzjoni ta’ poter mhux ugwali bejn l-irġiel u n-nisa”.

“Ħafna stati membri tal-UE implimentaw strateġija ta’ azzjoni nazzjonali għall-ġlieda kontra l-vjolenza domestika li nkludiet fil-leġislazzjoni, kodiċi penali u servizzi ta’ appoġġ, iżda għad hemm sfidi x’jiġu ffaċċjati”.

“Skond studju mill-Istitut Ewropew dwar l-Ugwaljanza Sesswali, il-maġġoranza tal-istrateġiji ta’ azzjoni nazzjonali jistgħu jkunu nieqsa mil-monitoraġġ u l-evalwazzjoni, nuqqas ta’ miżuri legali, u nuqqas ta’ mplimentazzjoni effiċjenti fil-protezzjoni tal-vittma. Hemm ukoll numru aktar baxx ta’ prosekuzzjonijiet fil-qrati meta mqabbla ma’ n-numru ta’ każijiet li jiġu rrapportati ".

Żminijietna tinnota li “Malta mhix nieqsa min servizzi offruti għall-vittmi ta’ vjolenza domestika u forom oħra ta’ vjolenza, iżda dejjem hemm il-ħtieġa għal iżjed protezzjoni u taħriġ aktar speċjalizzat għall-uffiċjali tal-pulizija li jkollhom l-ewwel kuntatt mal-vittma. Dan għandu jinkludi wkoll aktar appoġġ għall-vittmi biex tgħinhom jerġgħu jintegraw fil-ħajja normali u jkunu jistgħu jipparteċipaw fid-dinja tax-xogħol, b’xogħol dinjituż”.

“Barra minn hekk, għandu jkun hemm aktar implimentazzjoni tal-liġijiet biex aktar nisa jirraportaw il-każi u b’hekk joħorġu minn ambjent vjolenti, flimkien ma’ aktar programmi ta’ għajnuna għall-aggressur”, temmet tgħid Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug.
