Press Release: Żminijietna appeals for more solidarity on migration

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left stated that it "welcomes proposals presented by the President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, on the pressing issue of migration. Żminijietna also welcomes the European Parliament's ratification of these proposals, but points out that the problems that they address have existed for months, if not years, prior to their issuance. Moreover, before coming in to effect, they must be approved by the EU member states, which could cause additional delay."

"European policy on the crisis of migration has largely been geared towards restricting the movement of migrants making their way towards, and across, the continent. There have been efforts made by various states within the Union to paint an excessively alarming portrait of this crisis, most evidently in the case of Hungary, whose actions have been and continue to worsen the situation. On the other hand, there has been a definite push towards European solidarity on the part of such countries as Sweden and Germany, a solidarity that has been called for by many years in Malta, Italy, Greece, et al."

“Żminijietna noted with satisfaction that Maltese MEPs have been consistently aiding the cause of European solidarity. Of perhaps greater satisfaction was the fact that refugees from Syria have recently been welcomed by various Latin American states in a show of international solidarity, but this has been somewhat tempered by the refusal of the states of the Persian Gulf, as well as that of Russia, to assist."

Throughout, said Żminijietna, it is important to remember that this is a crisis characterised by a humanitarian tragedy, one precipitated and aggravated by the politico-economic decisions of various states which have led to global destabilisation and inequality.

Stqarrija Stampa: Refugjati: Żminijietna tappella ghal iktar solidarjeta'

Żminijietna – Leħen ix-Xellug qalet li “Nilqghu il-proposti  mressqa dwar l-immigrazzjoni mill-President tal-Kummissjoni Ewropea Jean Claude Juncker, u nilqghu il-fatt li dawn qed jiġu appoggjati mill-Parlament Ewropew. Dawn il-proposti misshom ilhom li saru, u issa jehtieg li jiġu appoggjati mill-istati membri ta' l-UE"

“Il-politika adottata mid-diversi pajjiżi  tal-Unjoni Ewropea kienet li l-Ewropa tirrestrinġi kemm  jista’ jkun l-iżbarg ta’ immigranti lejn l-Ewropa, kif  ukoll li jiġi ristrett il-moviment ħieles ta’ dawn  il-persuni. Ninnutaw li pajjiżi bhall-Ungerija qed jaghmlu s-sitwazzjoni aghar milli hi. Fl-istess hin, iżda ninnutaw li pajjiżi bhall-Isvezja u l-Ġermanja qed juru ferm iktar solidarjeta' minn bosta pajjiżi ohra, u ninnutaw ukoll li pajjiżi bhall-Malta, l-Italja u l-Grecja ilhom iqajmu l-htiega ta' solidarjeta' Ewropea”.

“Kien ta’ sodisfazzjon  li l-MEPs Maltin lkoll qed jagħtu appoġġ lill-politika  tas-solidarjetà. U kien ta’ sodisfazzjon akbar li numru  ta’ pajjiżi mil-Amerika Latina aċċettaw li jospitaw  numru ta’ immigranti milquta mil-kunflitt   fis-Sirja. Fl-istess hin, ninnutaw li pajjiżi bhall-dawk tal-golf u r-Russja mhux qed jaċċettaw refuġjati mis-Sirja”.

"Il-kwistjoni tar-refuġjati hi karatterizzata minn tracedja umanitarja u minn deċiżjonijiet politiċi u ekonomiċi li żiedu l-inugwaljanza u l-gwerer f'bosta' pajjiżi".
