28 t’April, 1958

Fi stqarrija mahruga minn Zminijietna Zghazagh tax-Xellug, l-ghaqda sellmet “lil dawk kollha li fit-28 t’April ta’ hamsin sena ilu taw sehemhom sabiex il-klassi tal-haddiema tiehu dak li kien jixirqilha.” ZZX stqarret “li llum pajjizna qieghed f’cirkostanzi totalment differenti minn dawk ta’ l-1958, izda l-htiega li l-klassi tal-haddiema u r-rapprezentanti taghha jkunu maghqudin, baqghet maghna daqs qatt qabel.”

ZZX kompliet billi qalet li “l-isfidi li qed jaffaccja ruhu maghhom il-haddiem illum il-gurnata huma hafna. Fosthom: nuqqas ta’ mpjiegi full-time; registrazzjoni tal-haddiema bhala self-employed sabiex ma jkunux intitolati ghall-beneficcji li jgibu maghhom mpjiegi fulltime; xoghol prekarju b’kuntratti definiti li jtemmu wara ftit xhur biss; paga minima nazzjonali li ma tirriflettix l-gholi tal-hajja li ghandna f’pajjizna; prezzijiet tal-propjeta’ li huma sproporzjonati meta mqabbla mall-qligh li l-haddiem jaghmel minn xogholu;  nuqqas ta’ mizuri u incentivi li jharsu s-sahha u s-sigurta’ tal-haddiema fuq il-post tax-xoghol; u politika neo-liberali li tpoggi t-tkabbir tal-qligh mill-produzzjoni qabel il-kwalita’ tal-hajja tal-haddiema.”

ZZX qalet li “dawn ir-realtajiet li qed jaffaccjaw il-haddiema, ghandna naghmlu minn kollox biex neghlbuhom jew intaffu l-impatt taghhom. Ahna qieghdin insejhu ghat-twaqqif ta’ Kunsill Trejdjunjonistiku Malti, li jinkludi it-Trejdjunjins ewlenija Maltin sabiex ikollhom vuci wahda u soda fin-negozjati taghhom ma’ korpi kostitwiti ohrajn u fi hdan fora differenti li fihom jinhtigilhom jippartecipaw. Nixtiequ wkoll naraw li l-partiti tax-xellug bhall-Malta Labour Party u Alternattiva Demokratika jaghrfu aktar il-htigijiet tal-masses, u jahdmu dejjem aktar biex jindirizzawhom.” ZZX ikkonkludiet l-istqarrija taghha billi qalet li “t-thaddim tas-Socjalizmu jibqa’ relevanti dejjem u kullimkien sakemm l-ingustizzji socjali u l-inugwaljanzi jibqghu maghna.”

28th April, 1958

In a statement issued by Żminijietna Left Youth, the movement praised “all those who had given their contribution for the working class to gain its rights, during the 28th April, 1958, general strike.” ŻLY stated that “nowadays our country is facing much different circumstances than those of fifty years ago; however the need of unity amongst the workers’ class and its representatives stays relevant to these days.”

ŻLY continued its statement by saying that “The worker nowadays still faces plenty of challenges that need to be tackled. Amongst them; Lack of full-time jobs within the labour market; self-employed registration of workers done purposely to deprive them from full-time job benefits;  precarious work based on definite contracts jobs which terminate in few months; national minimum wage which does not reflect the rise in prices that Malta is facing nowadays; property prices which are not proportional to the gains that the workers obtain from their salaries; and neo-liberal policies which put the profits of production before the workers’ quality of life.”

ŻLY said that “the utmost should be done to overcome these tough realities being faced by the workers. We are reiterating our call for the foundation of a Maltese Trade Union Council, which includes the main trade unions in Malta, in order for the latter to have a firmly unite and solidified voice when dealing with other stakeholders, in various fora. We also would like to see Leftist Parties such as the MLP and AD to recognize the real needs of the masses, and work much more for them to be addressed.” ŻLY concluded their statement by saying that “Socialist policies remain relevant always, locally, nationally and internationally alike, up to that day when social inequalities and injustices are eradicated.”
